ELECTROLYSIS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

electrolysis, permanent hair removal

1. What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the practice of permanent hair removal that employs the use of a very fine probe or filament which sends a minute amount of treatment energy to the follicle rendering it unable to produce another hair.

2. How long does each treatment take?

The length of each appointment depends on the amount of hair you want to remove and whether you have had previous treatments. Usually, treatments start off minimally with 15 minutes, but, depending on previous hair removal methods and the desired treatment area, may last up to one hour or more. Initially, the Electrologist will schedule a consultation where a thorough health history assessment will be conducted to fully understand any issues that may or may not exist. Then, after fully explaining Electrolysis, and tailoring a treatment plan according to your previous hair removal methods and the goals you have set for yourself, he/she may conduct a demonstration session. Finally, an electrolysis treatment may actually take place at that point. It must be stressed that commitment and consistency are key elements to the success of the recommended treatment plan and is the utmost requirement in my practice.

3. What is the normal growth cycle of a hair?

All hairs have differing cycles of growth and are not visible on the surface of the skin at the same time. Hair normally grows for its usual cycle and then naturally sheds and replaces itself. Following active growing periods, most hair follicles go into a dormant stage. This period of dormancy may last for an indefinite period of time, however, replacement hairs from dormant hair follicles should not be mistaken as regrowth from previously treated follicles.

4. Is Electrolysis painful?

This is the biggest misconception out there that I have heard over the years. There is a sensation associated with the electrolysis procedure, which one might interpret as a slight warming effect, but with today’s computer-assisted technology, client comfort has been maximized.

5. Is Electrolysis safe?

Absolutely! You are your own best advocate. When contacting a professional Electrologist, I encourage you to ask plenty of questions. First, you should inquire if the Electrologist holds membership in the state’s professional association, The New York Electrolysis Association, an affiliate of the American Electrology Association. Second, you should ask if the Electrologist adheres to the American Electrology Association’s Standards of Practice and Infection Control Standards. This is your assurance that universal precautions are being taken in the professional’s office. Next, you should ask if the Electrologist attends continuing education events to improve and enhance her knowledge and skills. Finally, up to date, state-of-the art equipment is advised for enhanced electrolysis treatment comfort. Unlike other temporary methods of hair removal, Electrolysis is safe for all areas of the body with the exception of hairs inside the nasal cavity or inside the ears. Finally, up to date, state-of-the art equipment is advised for enhanced electrolysis treatment comfort. Unlike other temporary methods of hair removal, especially laser hair removal, Electrolysis is safe for all areas of the body with the exception of hairs inside the nasal cavity or inside the ears.  Electrolysis does not discriminate against skin or hair types, and is equally effective on light or dark skin, light or dark hairs.  It is an individual treatment - as individual as you are!

6. How expensive is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is considered very cost effective when compared to other temporary hair removal methods. A schedule is set up depending on the needs of each client which will determine the length and frequency of electrolysis treatments.

7. Are there side effects from Electrolysis?

Depending on skin type sensitivity, some clients may experience some redness and slight swelling immediately following electrolysis treatment which typically resolves itself within an hour or two of treatment. Post-treatment care will be discussed with you by your Electrologist during the consultation. A good Electrologist will always make him/herself available for questions.

8. Why not use temporary methods?

For the obvious reason, they are just that, temporary. These methods can irritate the skin and may cause ingrown hairs, which can be painful and as unsightly as the hair itself. You will still be left with the hairs that you want to be rid of. Temporary methods can oftentimes exacerbate the problem, and compound the hair growth. Electrolysis remains the only PERMANENT hair removal method recognized by the FDA. Temporary hair removal methods such as waxing, tweezing, shaving and threading are just that - temporary. Laser hair removal cannot claim permanent hair removal, only permanent hair reduction.

9. How do I choose an Electrologist?

When choosing an Electrologist, make sure that the individual you are considering has kept current on latest industry developments. If visiting the office for a consultation, make sure it is professional and clean. You can identify an Electrologist in your area by asking friends and family first. After all, a satisfied client is the best resource for finding a professional. Alternatively, you can refer to area yellow pages, and/or search the online directory of the American Electrology Association www.electrology.com or the New York Electrolysis Association www.electrolysisnyea.org.

10. Can women begin or continue Electrolysis treatments during pregnancy?

Although Electrolysis has never been proven harmful to pregnant women, it is suggested that you seek the advice of your physician before you continue or begin treatment.
